The Kakching Khunou College is a co-educational Government College located at Umathel, Kakching Khunou in the Kakching District of Manipur. It offers Arts and Science undergraduate degree courses in 19 (nineteen) subjects and is permanently affiliated to the Manipur University. Situated at distance of 63km from Imphal, it caters to a large number of students belonging to the backward section of the society (SC, ST, OBC and other backward communities) from 60 odd villages of Kakching, Chandel, Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts.
Background:
The college was established by the people of Kakching Khunou to serve a special purpose of imparting higher education to the educationally backward people of the region.
Shri Yumnam Yaima Singh, the then Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, laid the foundation stone for the construction of classrooms and administrative building on 12th July 1981 (Sunday). Funds have been raised through door-to-door donation campaigns. The poor and backward people donated generously at their own capacity but, it was not enough. So, a portion of the 12.98 acres of land reserved for the college has been used for cultivation for raising funds.
The administrative building and the initial set of classrooms have been inaugurated on 2nd June 1983 by Shri Irengbam Tompok Singh, the then Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur.
Administration:
One Governing Body (GB) constituted for every three years with nominal grant-in-aid from the State Government was managing the college until recently. In March 2018 the college has been converted into a full-fledged Govt. college along with five other by a decision of the state cabinet. Now, the GB has been dissolved.
The college was granted permanent affiliation up to B.A. and B.Sc. level by the Manipur University from the academic session 1993-94. It was also included in the 2f and 12-B of UGC Act. 1956 in 1996. Recently it has been accredited with “Grade B” by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bengaluru with Institutional CGPA score of 2.27.
